Antoni Gaudí (1852-1926) is the
maximum figure in Catalan architecture, projecting far beyond Modernism to
reach levels of universality achieved only by extremely few creators over
the centuries. Gaudí’s architecture plays with shapes, spaces and volumes.
To go through Guadí’s most outstanding works is to make a long list of
masterpieces of world architecture: “Casa Vicens” (1883), “Palau Güell”
(1886-89), the “Colegio de las Teresianas” (1889-90), the crypt in “Colonia
Güell” (1898-1916), Barcelona “Güell” Park (1900-1914), “Casa Batlló” (1904)
and the “Pedrera” (1906-12) and, of course, the culmination of his
architectural thought: the unfinished “Sagrada Familia”. |
