Josep Puig i
Cadafalch (1867-1956) is a fundamental figure in Modernist architecture:
“Els Quatre Gats” (1895-1896), the “Casa Amatller” (1898-1900), “Palau
Macaya” (1901), “Fábrica Casarramona” (1911), “Casa de les Punxes”
(1903-1905) at Diagonal avenue, Barcelona, and the “Caves Codorniu” (Codorniu
cellars) (1906) are examples of his passionately Modern proposals and, at
the same time, evidence of his debt to the Catalan architectural tradition.
Puig i Cadafalch was also conspicuous for profound dedication to “Catalanism”:
he longed to see Catalonia restored to the splendour of the eleventh and
twelfth centuries when it was a world power and enjoyed its own legal and
political identity. |
