This
architect (1848-1926) has the honour of being considered the author of the
first Modernist work built in Tarragona: a monument, in 1888, to the
medieval hero, Roger de Llúria. Like many of the Modernist artists, Salas
had a passion for the history of his country. So, as a very active member of
the “Sociedad Arqueológica Tarraconense”, he defended the extremely rich (mostly
Roman) architectural heritage of the city. He also directed his efforts
towards recovering the monastery of Poblet, a spiritual, historical and
cultural heart of Catalonia. Salas i Ricomà also raised the banner of his
militant Catholicism by converting the Cathedral of Tarragona, collaborating
in the birth of the “Museo Diocesano”, and building the church of “El
Serrallo” and convent of the Carmelitas. |

Especially important in the
civil work of this architect, which played an important part in arranging
the urban development of Tarragona at the beginning of the twentieth century,
are the façade of Valls Town Hall (1896), the schools in Falset (1909-16)
and particularly, “Casa Salas” (1907), in Tarragona’s “Rambla Nova”, without
doubt, the most outstanding Modernist building in the city. |
