SUITE 103 - de César Martinell i Brunet

The buildings which contributed most to the fame of this architect (1888-1973), born in Valls, are connected with agriculture. He built a about fifty agricultural co-operatives, factories and cellars, like those in El Pinell de Brai, Gandesa, and Falset, or the co-operative in Cornudella de Montsant. Martinell was also outstanding as a writer of the history of Catalan architecture. His works are indisputable authorities on medieval and baroque architecture. After the civil war, he restored numberless churches affected by the conflict (in Seu d’Urgell, Lleida, altarpieces in Arenys de Mar and Reus).

Dibujo de Ràfols de la Cooperativa de El Pinell de Brai

Martinell also made great efforts to disseminate among the following generations of architects, the work of Antoni Gaudí, with whom he had closely collaborated in the Sagrada Familia.
