The
buildings which contributed most to the fame of this architect (1888-1973),
born in Valls, are connected with agriculture. He built a about fifty
agricultural co-operatives, factories and cellars, like those in El Pinell
de Brai, Gandesa, and Falset, or the co-operative in Cornudella de Montsant.
Martinell was also outstanding as a writer of the history of Catalan
architecture. His works are indisputable authorities on medieval and baroque
architecture. After the civil war, he restored numberless churches affected
by the conflict (in Seu d’Urgell, Lleida, altarpieces in Arenys de Mar and
Reus). |
