Jujol
(1879-1949) is without doubt one of the most talented artists produced by
the districts of Tarragona. Not only was he an architect, but also a painter,
sculptor, draughtsman and designer. Whenever he undertook a job, Jujol based
it on his conception of total art: it was only by integrating all these
disciplines that he could have produced such unique, undying works. From
1904 to 1926, he collaborated with Gaudí in works like the “Casa Batlló”,
the “Pedrera” or “Güell” Park, often becoming Gaudí’s right hand man. Many
of the most genuinely Gaudí-style buildings, use artistic techniques
(collage, wrought iron, and trencadís -broken ceramic-) and many ornamental
elements which can be attributed to the talent of Jujol, to whom Gaudí gave
full creative freedom. |

Especially important among the
works done on his own are: the “Torre de la Creu”, or “Torre dels Ous”
(1913), in Sant Joan Despí, and many others spread over Tarragona: the
“Teatro Metropol” (1908), the conversion of the “Casa Bofarull” (1914) in
Els Pallaresos, the church of “Vistabella” (1918), and the “Santuario de
Montserrat” (1929) Montferri, which he left unfinished. |
