This
Barcelona (1858-1931) architect is possibly one of the most prolific
Modernists. In Barcelona alone he made more than thirty buildings of
acknowledged merit. This was possible because Enric Sagnier had the
confidence and support of the wealthiest bourgeoisie. The “Casa Garriga
Nogués” (1902), “El Pinar” or “Torre Arnús” (1903), the church and convent
of “Pompeii” (1907-1915), the buildings he put up for La Caixa, on the
corner of the Via Laietana and Calle Jonqueres (1917), or the Tibidabo
“Templo Expiatorio” (Church) (1909-1931) are some of his best known
buildings. |

Sagnier was a militant
Catholic, and in 1893 founder and member of the first board of governors
of the “Cercle Artístic de Sant Lluc”, a conservative group, profoundly
Catalan, defending the Christian roots of Catalonia, greatly frequented
by Modernist artists and very influential in its time. |
