Like so many
other architects of his generation, this architect (1882-1936), born in
Mataró, was, over the years, to develop Modernism in the direction of the
more sober styles of Noucentisme and other trends from the north and centre
of Europe. 1910 saw two of Goday’s most noteworthy Modernist buildings: the
“Casa Domènech Girbau”, or “Casa de los Barquitos”, and the “Casa Girbau”,
contiguous sites on Sant Pol beach in Sant Feliu de Guíxols. Later, Goday
was to be appointed municipal architect of Barcelona. While in this post,
specialising in building schools (erecting municipal school complexes like:
Baixeras, Lluís Vives, Pere Vila, Milà i Fontanals and Ramon Llull, among
others), Goday became the definer of the new Noucentist style which would
gradually gain ground.
