A creation
for which this Barcelona artist (1850- 1916) is most known is the set of
over thirty benches and street lamps in the Passeig de Gràcia (1906) often
attributed even today to Antoni Gaudí. For a time he was the Municipal
Architect of Barcelona (it is interesting to note that he was awarded this
post in 1889 instead of one who was to be a leading figure in Modernist
architecture - Lluís Domènech i Montaner). Before that, in 1897, Falqués had
erected one of his peak works – the building for the “Hidroeléctrica de
Catalunya” company in Barcelona. Later, he turned to a more rhetorical
bombastic style in works like the public monuments to the politician Rius i
Taulet (1897-1901) and the playwright Pitarra (1906). |
